Exhibition Overview & Objectives

The online exhibition Bound by Tradition: Physical Bibliography of East Asian bookbinding explores the physical bibliography of traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean stab-binding books, highlighting paper production and book binding structure.

Bound by Tradition focuses primarily on books with stab-bindings, also referred to as side-stitched, thread-binding, or pouch-binding. The stab-binding represents the last stage in the history of traditional East Asian bookbinding, which was predominant in the 14th to 17th centuries.

This exhibit includes 14 items held in Asia collections, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
