Korean Special Collections

 

Korea Special Collection at Thomas Hale Hamilton Library, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has 329 Korean language titles and 1,354 volumes. Most of them were from the East-West Center collection as well as personal donations. Out of Korean special collection, woodblock print comprises 51.3% of the total printing type, and 49.3% of Korean rare books were published during the Japanese colonial era. By subject, literature takes up most of this collection, which is 57.61%.

  • Chosŏn Ch'ongdokpu Chungch'uwŏn collection (18c.)

Korean: 조선 총독부 중추원 / Chinese: 朝鮮總督府 中樞院 / Japanese: 蔵朝鮮総督府ノート調査結果

  • Marshall Pihl Collection & Miscellaneous Rare Books

This collection was donated by Marshall R. Pihl (1933-1995) who taught Korean literature at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. This collection consists of 93 titles and 206 volumes. Check the list of Marshall R. Pihl Collection.

  • 1948 manuscript of a trip to Cheju Island  [1948-yŏn p'ilsabon Chejudo Kihaeng]

This is a manuscript written by a police officer who had a trip to Cheju Island (Jeju Island) from August 29, 1948, to October 8, 1948. At the time, about 700 police officers were flown in from the Korean peninsular to Cheju Island. This record describes vigilance and attacks on civilians in Cheju. This rare record seems related to the Cheju uprising, which occurred on Cheju Island in South Korea from April 1948 to May 1949.
